HAJMASKER TRAINING AREA, Hungary – The success of Tobruq Legacy 2018 was highlighted during the closing ceremony and distinguished visitor day at Hajmasker Training Area June 14. The exercise gave Soldiers in the 10th AAMDC an opportunity to work together with U.S. Allies integrating air and missile defense capabilities.
This year’s exercise, hosted by Hungary, marks the fourth iteration of the multinational air defense exercise. Col. David Shank, commander of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command said this year’s Tobruq Legacy was about building air and missile defense capabilities with our NATO Allies.
“The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command along with 18 other participating nations, integrated air and missile defense capabilities from multi-national air defense platforms to Surface Based Air Defense Centers,” Shank said.
Making sure the 10th AAMDC systems were integrated and synched with the other participating nations was the key to a successful air and missile defense posture, Shank said.
“The technical interoperability and data link architecture ensured all sensors and shooters participating in the exercise shared a common air picture to defend against exercise air and missile threats.”
During this year’s Tobruq Legacy closing ceremony Col. Pál Szűcs, Hungarian Air Force Operations and Training Chief, expressed his appreciation to all the participating NATO nations.
“During this two week period all of you eagerly demonstrated a high sense of commitment and you have fulfilled your tasks with a high level of proficiency,” Szűcs said. “We came here from different nations with different languages but we are committed to the same air defense mission.”
After addressing the Soldiers and distinguished visitors, Szűcs passed the symbolic Tobruq Legacy totem to Col. Miroslaw Bodnar representative of the General Command of the Polish Armed Forces, who will be hosting the exercise in 2019.
Bodnar thanked the crowd on behalf of the Polish authorities for the opportunity to host the annual forthcoming air and missile defense exercise.
“I can promise you that we will try to keep the same level of professionalism,” Bodnar said. “I am positive we will together surmount all upcoming difficulties.”
After sharing his admiration to the air defenders for taking an active part in the exercise, Bodnar thanked Hungary for their hospitality this year for hosting Tobruq Legacy.
“I would like to express my strong appreciation to the Hungarian nation for hosting the Tobruq Legacy 2018 exercise,” Bodnar said.
Tobruq Legacy trains Surface Based Air Defense NATO members in a multinational environment. It serves as a confirmation of newly obtained capabilities and provides an opportunity to improve the level of interoperability of multinational forces.
