Martha Merriwether, Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s lead for Data Program Management, was awarded a Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award during a ceremony held at NUWC Headquarters on June 7, 2018. The award is the third highest Navy honorary award that recognizes services that have resulted in high value or benefits to the Navy.

Don McCormack, Executive Director, Naval Surface and Undersea Warfare Centers, and Division Newport Technical Director Ron Vien, presented the award to Merriwether, a resident of Newport, R.I., who has served the federal government for more than 60 years and the U.S. Navy for 49 years.

“We talked about the countless people you have mentored, kept out of trouble and helped make the nation and the Navy what it is. Without you, we wouldn’t have gotten the products and services that we did,” McCormack said. “You are a part of NUWC and Newport. Congratulations on a great career and your service to the nation.”

Merriwether received the award for her diligent service for the Navy, which began in March 1969. Merriwether has tremendous corporate knowledge and has trained generations of technical personnel in the ways of procuring goods and services for the Navy.

“I’m overwhelmed,” said Merriwether, who was joined at the ceremony by her daughter, Judy. “I’m glad to see all these wonderful faces here, many of whom I helped when they were just starting out.”

During her career, Merriwether has received numerous letters of appreciation and special act awards. In April 2018, she won the NUWC Newport Commander-Technical Director Award as a member of the Technical Acquisition Team.

Her Meritorious Award citation reads in part:

“The Naval Undersea Warfare Center is pleased to award Ms. Martha L. Merriwether the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award for her contracting and data management achievements, superior mentoring skills, and exemplary service from March 1969 to the present. For nearly 50 years, she has made significant improvements to Division Newport’s Commercial Acquisition capability. In her daily tasking, Ms. Merriwether provides the tireless leadership, vision, and attention to detail that ensures the fleet is getting the best possible product.

“Her extraordinary knowledge and her commitment to training the next generation of contract specialists and technical acquisition personnel will have a lasting impact on Division Newport. Ms. Merriwether’s exceptional professionalism, personal initiative, and total commitment to duty have provided unprecedented benefit to the Naval Sea Systems Command, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport, the U.S. Navy, and the Nation.”

NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Wash.
