Matthew C. Perry Elementary School students participated in an end-of-the-school-year Field Day at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, June 8, 2018.

The Field Day included different activities that promoted staying active during summer break.

“This is an end-of-the-school-year celebration, and it encourages physical activity,” said Denise Rosado, a substitute teacher at Matthew C. Perry Elementary School. “This is important for students going into summer and making sure they get outside and stay active.”

Students were separated into groups by classroom and sent to stations set up with different activities.

“The theme of this event was ‘superheroes’,” said Rosado. “I think that everyone can relate to superheroes and super powers. It was just a fun way to encourage students to dress up.”

In the gymnasium, there was a “Super Power Parachute,” “Flash Dash,” and “Villain Strike Out,” where students bowled. These activities involved the students working together to race against fellow classmates.

In another area, students participated in an obstacle course, Hula-Hooped and jump roped at a station called “Superheroes in Training.”

In one of the hallways of the elementary school, there was an egg and spoon relay called “Carry the Kryptonite,” as well as an “Aqua Man Sponge Race,” where students were required to carry a sponge between their knees and race around a cone.

After all the activities, volunteers made snow cones for the students as they sat with their class and ate chips.

Rosado said this event was a good way to celebrate the students’ hard work for the entire school year.
