More than 50 Citizen-Airmen of the Michigan Air National Guard have joined the Class of 2018.

The members of the 127th Wing have all earned an Associate’s Degree from the Community College of the Air Force. The degree recognizes a combination of military and civilian education and training. Enlisted members of the Air Force are automatically enrolled in the CCAF in a course of study that aligns with their particular military career field. Thanks in part to a re-emphasis on the value of the CCAF in recent years, the 127th Wing at Selfridge Air National Guard Base is hovering at around 25 percent of all of its enlisted members holding a CCAF degree.

For many military personnel, the CCAF degree and its college credits can serve as a springboard to earning associate’s or bachelor’s degrees from civilian colleges.

“Transferring credits from the CCAF into other programs allows Air Force members to really get a jumpstart on to their civilian degrees, saving them time and money,” said Senior Airman Cassandra Cazares, a personnel specialist with the 127th Wing.

At the ceremony honoring graduates, Chief Master Sgt. Andra Modock, herself a past CCAF degree recipient, served as the commencement speaker.

“This goal that you have achieved can set the positive example for the people in your life,” she told graduates, encouraging them to continue to strive to reach the highest levels.

Among the graduates, two Airmen, Tech. Sgt. Matthew Sellers and Staff Sgt. Nicholas Smith both earned two CCAF degrees, having served in two different Air Force career fields.

“I was motivated by the senior enlisted leaders in my office,” said Sellers, a member of the 127th Comptroller Flight. “They set a high standard and encourage us to meet that standard and exceed it.”

The 127th Wing typically graduates about 50 personnel with CCAF degrees every year. As was the case in most years, the 2018 commencement was only attended by slightly more than half of the graduating class – the other half is on duty status in locations around the world.

“That is the nature of what we do,” explained Master Sgt. Greg Brooks, a training specialist with the 127th Force Support Squadron who helps to oversee the CCAF program at Selfridge. “We continue to improve ourselves as Airmen, through programs like the CCAF, so that we can do the nation’s business, when called upon.”
