The memorial ride began in 2014 with only 12 riders. This year, 137 riders attended to honor fallen police officers, military and civilian alike.
“We started this four years ago in support of National Police Week,” said Scott Deeds, 721st Security Forces Squadron chief of plans and programs, and ride organizer. “Each installation has their own piece in the puzzle. We also marry-up with the police department downtown for an escort along the ride.”
With their Colorado Springs Police Department motor unit escort, the riders took to the streets, passing through CMAFS, Fort Carson, Schriever Air Force Base, Peterson AFB and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The 100-mile ride ended at CMAFS, where riders ate lunch and interacted with local and military police officers.
“With a unit our size, some guys are prior military and some are not,” said Sgt. Maurice Campbell, CSPD specialized enforcement division motorcycle unit. “We enjoyed getting to talk to some of the guys and gals about common interests and share our experiences. We got to sit with the Fort Carson Military Police and we were able to share information and plan some training together. Just getting out to meet people – that’s the best thing there is out here.”
Deeds said these interactions are crucial to building stronger ties with local law enforcement.
“They [CSPD] came on board and it’s been a growing thing ever since,” said Deeds. “My favorite part is coming up here and seeing the officers in uniform interacting with everyone. We can’t thank them enough for what they’re doing and that’s critical to me.”
