    Torchlight walk in Solferino
    June 23. The Italian Red Cross has invited national Red Cross societies around the world to celebrate of the ideals of the Red Cross, and to participate in a 7-kilometer torchlight walk between the towns of Castiglione and Solferino. The event commemorates Henry Dunant’s experience of giving care to the wounded in the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino, which took place June 24, 1859. While Dunant did not participate in the battle, he witnessed its aftermath and was motivated by the horrific suffering of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield to begin a campaign that would eventually result in the Geneva Conventions and the establishment of the International Red Cross.

    June 16, from 3:30 p.m., Pisa. The Duomo, the Leaning Tower and every building around the Arno River will be decked with more than 70,000 candles. Flickering yellow flames will light up each doorway and window ledge, their reflections floating along the Arno so vibrantly it be¬comes clear why this night is called La Luminara, Italian for the Illumination.     Pisa celebrates its patron saint on June 17. To mark the event, from 9:30 p.m. the city’s four historic districts compete against each other in a regatta on the River Arno. This tradition dates to medieval times, when similar competitions took place in Pisa to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. Since 1718, the regatta has become part of the city’s patron saints celebrations.
