    Story by Sgt. Jonah Lovy

    12th Marine Corps District

SLCDA is a week-long academy held aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia from July 16th through 22nd, 2018. Attendees are taught but Marine Corps leaders on subjects like, ethics, teamwork, leadership and self-confidence. Students are encouraged to try new things and strengthen their abilities as a leader.
Sanchez is a 17 year old junior at Mesa Verde High School where she holds a 3.25 grade point average. She is the team captain for her water polo team and played varsity wrestling for three years.
“These are sports that push you and force you to dig deep and to embrace the suck, which is a trait I have practiced since I was a kid,” said Sanchez. “It really has helped me become who I am today.”
On her own time, Sanchez volunteers at a church Airsoft program helping children learn proper gun safety. She is also a leader at the Sylvan Middle School wrestling program where she coaches young athletes on technique and determination.
“I taught young kids that when life gets hard, you push through and show the world that you have what it takes to stay in the fight,” Said Sanchez. . “I have realized throughout my life that it is not about me; it’s about you and the people around you and how you’re going to get through life.
Sanchez is motivated to attend the SLCDA to challenge herself and learn as much as she can about Marne Corps leadership. While she is there she will learn valuable lessons from well qualified mentors about the nature of the Marine fighting spirit.
“It is always about being the best version of yourself” said Sanchez. “I want to go to the leadership camp for the amazing experience I can achieve. I do want to train, but I also want to be the best and win.”
Sanchez plans to return to school and graduate with the skills and lessons learned at the academy.
