FORT POLK, La. — One of the benefits of an assignment to the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk is the opportunity to use the installation’s Toledo Bend Recreation Site.
Located along the western shore of Toledo Bend — the largest man-made reservoir in the South — the site offers cabins, yurts, recreational vehicles and primitive camping sites, picnic areas and boat rentals.
Toledo Bend Reservoir is also known for its excellent fishing, and the TBRS has boat ramps available for a nominal fee, making it a popular destination for anglers.
When you throw in a wide-open area for water skiing, pleasure boating, swimming, kayaking and canoeing, TBRS has something for most everyone.
Another pastime the TBRS hosts during spring and summer is a popular dinner cruise. Participants are typically fed a steak or chicken dinner under a pavilion on a point that extends into the reservoir, followed by an excursion on a pontoon boat.
Following the cruise, participants gather around a campfire for old-fashioned s’mores — the perfect end to a perfect evening.
Jeremy Hayes is the TBRS manager and said the dinner cruises are popular.
“We have two in May, two in June, and one each in July and August when it gets a little hotter,” Hayes said. “We can take up to 32 diners each time; that’s eight on each pontoon boat.”
The next cruises are slated for June 22-23. Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. with the cruise sailing at 7:30 p.m., offering plenty of daylight to catch Toledo Bend’s scenic beauty, followed by breathtaking views of the sun going down in the direction of neighboring Texas.
Cost for the cruise is $45 per couple or $25 per single. To reserve a spot at the next event call (888) 718-9088.
