USS Gerald R. Ford Sailor’s Daughter Receives Wings Over America Scholarship

Kristina Boone, a senior at Matthew F. Maury High School, Norfolk, Va., is this year’s Wings Over America, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Scholarship awardee. Scholarship awardees will be recognized at the Wings Over America annual reception on Monday, June 4 at Sewell’s Point Golf Club.

The Wings Over America, USS Gerald R. Ford and USS Theodore Roosevelt scholarship is presented annually to students who are siblings or dependents of active duty Sailors onboard either ship. It offers the awardee the opportunity to use the scholarship to focus on their studies and future academic goals.

“Receiving this 2018 scholarship means that I can fully commit myself to my education and I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to look at my application and award me this scholarship,” said Boone. “This award is a vote of confidence which brings me one step closer to achieving my academic goals.”

On top of maintaining a 4.5 grade point average, Boone is also actively involved in many school organizations. She is the president of the National Honor Society (11th and 12th), Student Council Association (9th and 10th), and captain of the indoor track and field team (11th and 12th).

Earning this scholarship was not solely based off Boone’s academic accomplishments. The scholarship also highlights the awardees’ work done around their community. Boone volunteered countless hours at Sentra Norfolk General, The YMCA Leadership Club, and EVMS Teen Advisory Board teaching about the dangers of e-cigarettes.

“You have to be extremely passionate about your education,” said Boone. “Take every opportunity you can to get scholarships like these.”

Boone is no stranger to the Ford crew. Her father, Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) Christopher Boone, assigned to Ford’s air department, has been supporting her from the start, along with her mother and two siblings.

“I always knew being stationed here that there was money being set aside for a scholarship, and always thought Kristina would be a great choice for this award,” said Senior Chief Boone. “We work as team, as a family, but Kristina has been granted this scholarship because of her four years of hard work and focus.”

Boone will be applying the money earned in the scholarship to the University of Virginia Commonwealth, where she will be majoring in biology and pre-med, and wishes to take the knowledge she will obtain at the next level of education and apply it to help others.

“I wish to pursue my education and advance towards a career in healthcare, to give back to the community, in a similar way that Wings Over America has so graciously given to me,” said Boone.
