28th Infantry Division, Task Force Spartan
AMMAN, Jordan — Task Force Spartan Soldiers with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 145th Field Artillery Regiment, 65th Field Artillery Brigade; and Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 28th Infantry Division; participated in a base defense drill in response to a mass casualty (MASCAL) exercise on May 9, 2018.
The purpose of the exercise was to validate the improved MASCAL plan and focus on communication and transportation. Casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) teams, combat lifesaver (CLS) personnel and casualty role players were pre-identified for the event.
The exercise started with the conclusion of an active-shooter scenario with five casualties. The “big” voice public address system was initiated by the battle desk to alert Soldiers that an active-shooter training exercise was being conducted.
The exercise was a prime example of how Soldiers maintain updated training to ensure every measure is covered in the event that a mass casualty were to occur. The drill concluded with an after-action review (AAR) conducted by Maj. Thomas Torchia, medical planner for the 28th Infantry Division, Task Force Spartan.
