    8th Marine Corps District

Jay Moirangthem of Stephen F. Austin High School in Sugar Land, Texas, was selected to participate in the Marine Corps 2018 Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy, July 16-23, at Marine Corps Base Quantico, V.A. Moirangthem was selected for his athletic performance and outstanding character, academic excellence and community leadership that reflects the Marine Corps’ values of honor, courage and commitment.

“My desire to be a better leader in my community and in the organizations I am a part of helped spark my interests in the SLCDA,” said Moirangthem. “I was ecstatic when I received news of being accepted into SLCDA. The acceptance to the academy had humbled me, but it also instilled confidence in my own abilities knowing what I am capable of.”

The SLCDA is a week-long summer program led by the Marine Corps and is designed to prepare rising high school sophomores and juniors for future success by introducing them to Marine Corps leadership traits, ethics, character development, teamwork and camaraderie.

“I am most looking forward to the leadership reaction courses and team based activities,” said Moirangthem. “I know that they will test my ability to work under pressure and force me to think and act decisively.”

During the academy, students will learn Marine Corps history, hear from notable leaders from across the country, and Marine Corps officers. Students will also take part in physical training and participate in a community service project.

“The program is a leadership program that will teach young high school students how to be an integral part of their community,” said Lt. Col. Sara E. McGrath, the officer coordinating the program this year. “That could be their high school, town or city, or the college they attend. We will give students the opportunity to listen to Marines and community leaders, experience physical and mental challenges, and then form their own leadership style from these challenges.”

It is the intent that at the end of the week, students who complete all the events successfully will graduate and return back to their communities more confident, selfless and better equipped to improve the lives of those around them.
