    Story by Sgt. Alvin Pujols

    8th Marine Corps District

The Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy is designed to attract our nation’s top-performing high school students by offering a one-week leadership program in the Washington, D.C. area. One individual has Marine Corps leadership since he was a young boy.

Tyson Henry, a SLCDA selectee will attend the week-long leadership academy in Quantico, Va., from July 16-22, 2018. There Henry will be joined by over 190 selectees from around the country who sought out this leadership challenge.

“Even though I’ve attended 4 leadership schools while being a Young Marine, this will give me a more realistic look at Marine Corps leadership for me to bring back, not only to the Young Marine program but to everyday life,” said Henry.

Henry, a student at Mountain View High School, had an interest in the military since his youth and has always been drawn to new challenges.

“I liked pretending to play soldier as a kid and wanted to learn more about the military so I wouldn’t offend anybody,” said Henry.
Ms. Henry and the unit commander for the Young Marines West Valley have both driven me to seek out leadership challenges, Henry said.

Henry is slated to attend SLCDA this summer, where she will participate in an intensive Marine Corps Ethics training, leadership and character development. During the week, the academy will test the participants through Marine Corps physical fitness and field exercises. They will meet Marine Corps and Navy combat veterans, and attend a Tuesday evening Sunset Parade at the Iwo Jima Memorial featuring the Commandant's Own Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Silent Drill Platoon.

“I have learned that my role is to mentor others into leadership to empower them to rise above their current situation and create a new path, a path to success,” said Henry. “I am confident that having the ability to combine the skills and knowledge I learn at SLCDA with those I have learned through the YMs will strengthen who I am today as a leader and who I will become as a leader in the future.”
