    Torchlight walk in Solferino
    June 23. The Italian Red Cross has invited national Red Cross societies around the world to celebrate the ideals of the Red Cross, and to participate in a 7-kilometer torchlight walk between the towns of Castiglione and Solferino.
    The event commemorates Henry Dunant’s experience of giving care to the wounded in the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino, which took place June 24, 1859. While Dunant did not par¬ticipate in the battle, he witnessed its aftermath and was motivated by the horrific suffering of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield to begin a campaign that would eventually result in the Geneva Conventions and the establishment of the International Red Cross.

On the back of the target is a painting of the festival’s namesake, the girifalco (gyrfalcon), its wings spread wide in flight. The competitor whose arrow hits the center of the target wins.
