USS Kentucky Blue Wins Trident Submarine Outstanding Performance Award

    BREMERTON, WA, UNITED STATES

    05.19.2018

Story by Petty Officer 1st Class Amanda Gray

    Commander, Submarine Group Nine

The Blue crew of the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) was presented with the 2017 Trident Submarine Outstanding Performance Award at the Armed Forces Gala at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton, May 19.

The award, also known as the Olympic Bowl Trophy, is announced annually by the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council of the Navy League and given to the top ballistic missile submarine in the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Rear Admiral Blake Converse, Commander, Submarine Group 9, and Command Master Chief Kevin Scarff presented the award to Cmdr. John Hale, the deputy commodore of Submarine Squadron 17, and the former Kentucky Blue commanding officer. Kentucky was underway conducting a strategic deterrent patrol, so they were unable to accept the award.

“Kentucky Blue is extremely deserving of this award for all of their hard work and dedication over the past year,” said Converse. “In 2016, Kentucky returned to strategic service after spending over 40-months in the shipyard. The crew’s commitment to reaching superior level performance post-overhaul is a testament to the leadership of the commanding officer and the tenacity of the crew. It is also a story of teamwork from the entire strategic deterrence community that enabled their success, including Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Trident Training Facility Bangor, Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific, and many others along the way.”

Kentucky Blue demonstrated exceptional service throughout 2017, supporting the nation's strategic deterrence mission with two patrols. Kentucky Blue also achieved superior marks in every readiness evaluation during the year, a process which helps determine the award recipient.

These areas include weapons system performance and readiness, navigation performance and practices, communication system performance, material condition and engineering readiness, personnel readiness, initiative in promoting new operational concepts, and tactical readiness.

The Trident Submarine Outstanding Performance Award was initiated in 1984 by Rear Adm. Willis "Pilly" A. Lent, who was serving as Navy League Council President. The first awardee was the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Michigan (SSBN 727).
