THIES, Senegal -- Four combat tours, eight duty stations and one adventurous career of 22 years with the United States Army is the story of Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey Garland.

Enlisting with the United States Army in 1995, it seems that Garland, currently a member of 7th Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division has been just about everywhere. Initially enlisting with the Reserves and then switching to active duty in 1997, he deployed to Iraq in 2003 and 2006. For his two tours to Afghanistan, he went in 2010 and 2013.

His first duty station duty station was Camp Howze, Korea and his last is Fort Drum. In between that time, he became a husband to his wife, Kimberly, in 1998. He also has his three children, Brandon, Mindy and Kari. On April 30, 2018, Garland received one more opportunity to travel to a new place before he trades his patrol cap for a baseball cap and enjoys retirement for a little while.

Garland was selected as one of 13 Soldiers who traveled to Thies, Senegal to train 30 Senegalese instructors that were looking to better prepare themselves for leading their upcoming Advanced Infantry Training. They needed someone who had experience in teaching Counter Improvised Explosive Device training, and Garland was a good fit. The course was three weeks long and consisted of more than 30 different classes.

"It was an amazing experience to work with a different Army, they were a very intelligent group and I am proud to say I have worked with the Senegalese Army," said Garland. "I can't think of a better way to leave the Military than to go to a place I've never been to and give some of my knowledge to skillful soldiers."

The Military has opened up many doors for Garland to pursue, but for the time being he plans to enjoy time with his family and do some traveling. Growing a lengthy beard is also a top priority to him, as he hasn't had more than a few-day scruff since 1995. From there it's hard to say, but for now it's all about just enjoying the moment for Garland.
