BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox and the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation hosted a Hiring Our Heroes event at Fenway Park, May 16, 2018.
The event brought together more than 100 employers interested in hiring current service members and US military veterans.
Even though they bring unique training and experience to the workplace, many service members, especially those in the reserve military components, struggle to find a civilian career.
“Although the national unemployment level is under 4%, for veterans [and reservists] it’s a little bit higher than that,” said Bruce Townshend, Chief of Employer Outreach at the Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve.
Less than 1% of the population serves in the armed forces. This can make it difficult to bridge the civilian-military divide, especially between employers and their reserve component staff.
The hiring managers at Fenway appeared to embrace the concept of hiring troops.
Service members bring with them an innate sense of ownership, leadership and teamwork, said one recruiter from a Boston area firm.
Air Force Maj. Gen. Gary Keefe, The Adjutant General, Massachusetts National Guard, emphasized how hiring those still serving part-time in uniform is not only patriotic, but also critical to the homeland defense.
Keefe went on to state that by providing a work environment that respects and encourages national service, employers are playing an active part supporting their local emergency response force.
Wars are fought by the troops on the battlefield, but they are also won on the back of industry and employers, said Keefe.
