The military ball is a deep-seeded tradition, often following standard protocol. Soldiers and their significant others dress to the nine. Spouses wear glitzy gowns or stylish suits. Soldiers wear the Army Service (ASU) with a bow tie or don the mess uniform.

Invitations extended to high-ranking government officials or veterans with ties to the unit are the norm. After fine dining and the traditional grog, the attendees let loose on the dance floor. The unit’s esprit de corps is on full display as they celebrate the unit’s accomplishments and dance the night away.

On the evening of May 3 at the Killeen Civic Center, the 3rd Artillery 16th Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division followed the traditional schedule except for the guest speaker. The “Rolling Thunder” went another route. How about Miss Texas, USA?

“Logan Lester was a great keynote speaker at our Battalion Ball,” said Lt. Col Joey Errington, 3-16th FA commander. “We asked her to speak to our team because her message aligns with our Army values.”

The Battalion's volunteer of the year, Bonnie Graham, introduced Logan to the over 425 attendees.

Her dress was elegant. Her crown sparkled. Logan Lester walked to the podium in a glistening white gown under the ambient lights of the auditorium and began her speech with humbleness juxtaposing her pageant gown and crown jewels with the service uniforms of the Soldiers returned from Korea.

Lester echoed the revered words in Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s famous speech “Duty, Honor, Country,” as she thanked and encouraged a room full of service members.

“These brave men and women have just arrived home from being deployed,” said Lester. “I am beyond touched to have been a part of this special experience.”

The Soldiers and their guests talked to her, she graciously took photos with as many as desired, and after taking part in the Order of Saint Barbara awards ceremony, she exited as gracefully as she arrived.

Miss Texas, USA Logan Lester competes in the Miss USA pageant May 21.
