VIRGIN ISLANDS--Virgin Islands National Guard personnel conducted a clean-up and grounds maintenance in and around the 210th Regional Training Institute at the Estate Bethlehem Military Compound, St. Croix, April 27.

The Chief of Staff and the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics authorized a team of soldiers from the 662nd Engineer Company to conduct general cleaning and maintenance on the RTI facility, which had been closed off since September 2017, when the Virgin Island experienced two Category 5 storms.

“This is a three phase process, in which phase one will consist of cleaning up the grounds around the RTI, basically getting the operational area, which is the first floor back up and running,” said Maj. Charlton Mosley, who is on special assignment from the Army National Guard Bureau Installations and Environment Directorate.

Phase one consisted of the soldiers conducting operations to address the much needed mold clean-up, which included sanitizing all the counters, appliances, furniture and debris removal.

“It was primarily the whole RTI building with the focus being on the first floor where the air conditioning is operational and accessible to everyone,” said Mosley.

With phase one being completed the team turned their attention to the schoolhouse grounds and the area immediately around it. The team’s mission was to spruce up between visits from the contracted landscaping team that usually clean up around the compound’s grounds.

“Phase two, has been to clean up the Virgin Islands Bethlehem Compound, they spent this past week getting rid of dead trees, cleaning up as much as they could around the ruins,” said Mosley.

Management will then focus their attention to other areas on the compound and bring in extra staff to support the mission. “Phase three will continue to clean up the compound, but we will address the motor pool requirements,” he said.

“Phase three will also involve moving all the vehicles to the WETS [weekend training site], and clear out space through troop labor,” Mosley stated. “We will probably bring on more soldiers and create specific motor pool space.”

Mosley envisions a self-help day in the coming weeks where all personnel could quite possibly spruce up the compound to encourage pride in the workplace. “We are getting prepared for the new hurricane season starting June 1”.

“We’re ready, we’re more prepared and we’re moving forward,” said Mosely. “The only way to show progression is by everybody coming together as a team to work together.”
