The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation.

This year’s National Day of Prayer theme was Unity, “making every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace,” Ephesians 4:3.

”Faith works,” said Chaplain (Brig. Gen.) Steven Schaick, deputy chief of chaplains, Headquarters U. S. Air Force, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. “So as we talk about unity and pray for unity, I’m here to tell you faith works and unity will never happen without the core and tenant of faith.”

The National Day of Prayer observance was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.
