Story by Staff Sgt. Zachary Vucic

    911th Airlift Wing

Bullet writing is the cornerstone of how the Air Force measures the performance of its Airmen. Perfecting the short action;impact;result statements however, can be quite challenging. The 911th Airlift Wing welcomed a special guest to host a class on the subject, and help its supervisors practice this essential skill.

Chief Master Sgt. Chin Cox, the senior enlisted leader for the Office of the Joint Staff Surgeon, took time out of her schedule and hosted classes on consecutive days to go over the basics of writing bullets, and answer questions from the Airmen in attendance.

Cox said she believes the idea of writing a good bullet can seem overwhelming at times. Her goal for the class was to break the idea down and simplify it, essentially building confidence. The classes were designed to benefit Airmen at all levels, and the standing-room-only audience was reflective of the Wing’s interest in continuously improving.

She said supervisors shouldn’t look at it as practicing bullet writing, but rather practicing being a supervisor. With the amount of tasks our Airmen are leveraged with, it can be easy at times to overlook tracking progress throughout the year to put on an enlisted performance report.

“We’re never an expert in the beginning,” Cox said. It’s a matter of supervisors embracing it, (and) being comfortable with being uncomfortable.”
