Story by Tech. Sgt. Daniel Heaton

    127th Wing

Deep in the back shops of the 127th Civil Engineer Squadron, some of Michigan’s newest Citizen-Airmen are working with their staff sergeants, getting up to speed on tasks and duties.

“This is really familiarization training,” explained Staff Sgt. Michael Godwin. “We have some new junior Airmen and so this is a chance to get everyone together and work as a team.”

About a half dozen Airmen were gathered around a stack of 2x4 pieces of lumber that were slowly being transformed into a wall frame. This was a practice job only — a chance for the team to build not only a strong wall, but a strong team as well.

The Airmen, all part of the Structures shop in the CE Squadron, were participating in a four day “super drill” at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, a time when the 127th Wing, of which the CE Squadron is a component, was actively engaged in refresher training of individual skills — such as carpentry work — and general war fighting skills.

“Really, its getting everyone together, having a few days to work together and get on the same page,” Godwin said.

Among the CE troops working on the project during the May super drill was Senior Airman Josh Tatterson. He recently joined the squadron after transferring in to the Michigan Air National Guard from another branch of military service.

“I chose the Guard because there are so many different jobs that we do — so many opportunities are available,” said Tatterson, who is also a student at the University of Michigan-Flint. “I was looking for real-world experience in a useful skill and I found it here.”
