(Millington, Tenn.) – Navy Recruiting Command Region West Chief Recruiter Navy Counselor Master Chief Edwin Stone of Salt Lake City, Utah retired after almost 30 years of dedicated service in the U.S. Navy during his retirement ceremony held in Millington, Tenn., May 4.
Concluding his three years as the senior most enlisted recruiter of 27 states including Guam and Japan, Stone played a large part in many Sailors and civilians throughout the fleet.
Navy Recruiting Command Region West Commodore Capt. Jason Webb addressed Stone during the ceremony: “It has absolutely been an honor and a privilege to have served with you master chief. The dedication you have had for this job, how much loyalty you have had for recruiting and the help you have provided to countless Sailors have been invaluable. There is no one more dedicated to the success of others than you.”
Stone has been a career recruiter for most of his time as a U.S. Navy Sailor, serving as the chief recruiter of Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Phoenix and NRD Michigan.
“I have had a great time in the Navy,” said Stone. “I would not have made it without all my friends and mentors along the way. You have all been a great source of knowledge and leadership.”
Stone has influenced many Sailors and civilians of Navy recruiting while continuing to lead, develop and mentor the Sailors of the future.
“Master Chief Stone is a tremendous leader,” said Navy Counselor Chief Kurt Strohschein. “He has accomplished quiet a lot in the Navy as a great recruiter and an even better person. He will be truly missed, but we all look forward to what he will do in the next chapter in his life.”
Stone enlisted in the Navy at 17 years old as a boiler technician. His first duty assignment was aboard USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3), home-ported in San Diego, Calif. He was then assigned to USS Jason (AR-8) where he completed two Western Pacific deployments in support of Operation Desert Shield.
His following duty station is where he started his journey as a career recruiter, serving as a NRD Portland Recruiter, Recruiter-in-Charge and Zone Supervisor in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“Times are tough,” said Stone. “But you have to rise up and meet whatever challenge comes your way. That is why we are here. Take care of your families, and meet the challenge.”
