Soldiers of 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment and 10th Brigade Support Battalion of 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, hosted seven Uganda People’s Defence Force soldiers for Home Station Training at Fort Drum, New York, April 17 - 28, 2018.

Home Station Training embeds the Uganda People’s Defence Force soldiers with 10th Mountain Division units in order to provide an understanding of how the U.S. Army conducts day to day business as well as planning for operations and training, said 1st Lt. Alex Roan, a task force engineer for 3-71 CAV.

Key events for the training included attending a commander’s conference, highlighting community services that the Army offers, command maintenance and marksmanship training involving the Electronic Simulation Range as well as an M4 firing range, said Roan.

The commander’s conference allowed the Ugandan soldiers to experience how the 10th Mountain Division units sync plans and distribute information, explained Roan. It demonstrated a way or a method of how to plan and what detail to plan for.

The Uganda People’s Defence Force is here to learn from the U.S. Army, said Maj. Peter Nyeko Kitara of the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces. When the Ugandan soldiers return to home, they will build on the experiences they had at Fort Drum.

During command maintenance, Kitara was particularly impressed with the Mine-resistant ambush protected all-terrain vehicle or MATV.

“Very good technology,” Said Kitara. “Our dream is that tomorrow we shall be there through cooperation with the U.S. Army and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces.”

Spc. Stephen Munding, an assault gunner for 3-71 CAV, conducted command maintenance alongside the Ugandans. He said they did preventive maintenance checks and services on a MATV and high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles.

“It’s a good experience working with a different country,” said Munding.

Uganda People’s Defence Force soldiers spent time conducting preliminary marksmanship instruction on the M4 carbine then took to the Electronic Simulation Range on Fort Drum, said Roan. They finished out their marksmanship training by going through an M4 carbine weapons qualification at a firing range.

Home Station Training with the Uganda People’s Defence Force contributes to the ongoing process of strengthening ties with Uganda as well as other African countries, said Roan.

“I’m looking forward to seeing us working together in any missions,” said Kitara.
