The Fantasy Island Shower Facility Project began in October 2017 and is a 12 foot by 20 foot concrete block building with two shower stalls and a unisex toilet. The project provides the nearby Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) campground with a usable restroom facility and will eliminate the need for a portable toilet on the campground. While the project improves the campground for use by patrons, it also provides the Seabees of NMCB-11 with valuable training and experience in concrete construction and underground utilities.
The largest challenge the Seabees have faced so far is material procurement. “Procuring construction material on Guam can often be challenging”, says the project supervisor, Builder 1st Class Juston Haller. “While Guam does have a surprisingly robust array of construction material, they often do not have the quantities that we require, which means that the material has to be shipped from the states,” he went on to say. To mitigate these issues the Seabees planned their project for months ahead of deployment. They meticulously planned out each construction activity and the required material for that activity, to allow them to anticipate when materials will be needed and how early they would need to order these materials. “As long as we stick with the plan we laid out for the project we should be able to eliminate delays due to material issues” BU1 Haller said. “When we start deviating from our schedules and working out of order, that’s when we get ourselves in trouble”
The Seabees anticipate placing the concrete roof in the next couple of weeks and from there the Seabees will split into two work crews, with one crew finishing the inside of the building and the other crew completing all the plumbing on the outside of the building.
NMCB-11 is a Seabee Battalion specializing in contingency construction, disaster response and humanitarian assistance. The Battalion is homeported in Gulfport MS.
