NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton Roads Chapter of the Surface Navy Association hosted a professional discussion luncheon, Dec. 10, on Naval Station Norfolk featuring Retired Navy Capt. David Poyer.

Poyer who has authored several books, read from his latest novel "The Weapon". This is the second time the HRSNA has invited Poyer to discuss one of his novels.

"I am a life member of the HRSNA and I am happy to not only see the turnout for my book signing but to visit some old friends and younger Sailors as well," said Poyer.

During the luncheon, HRSNA held a raffle for several gifts, including autographed books, tickets to a hockey game and other miscellaneous prizes.

Capt. Bob Oldani, chief of staff for Commander, Naval Surface Force, Atlantic and President, HRSNA said door prizes were given to boost morale and to give Sailors not familiar with the author a chance to win and enjoy one of his books.

After lunch Poyer autographed and answered questions and gave aspiring writers some useful advice.

"If you would like to write do not rely on inspiration because inspiration is something that comes very seldom," said Poyer. "Instead use developmental tools to write."

At the end of the luncheon, Oldani presented Poyer with HRSNA memorabilia to thank him for taking the time to come out and talk about his book.
