Navy Recruiting District Ohio Participate in VEX Worlds 2018

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Ohio’s commanding officer, recruiters, Explosive Ordnance Mobile Unit One (EODMU 1), Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) sailors and civilians participate in VEX Worlds Championship 2018 held in Louisville, Kentucky, April 27.

During the team’s presence at VEX Worlds Championship, NRD Ohio’s commanding officer Cmdr. Benjamin Martin presented an award during one of many awards ceremonies.

Throughout his speech before presenting The Promote Award winners, Martin shared two pieces of advice he referred to as, “Frenchy’s Focus,” a play on his Navy call sign, Frenchy.

“First, train well,” said Martin. “Effort and preparation are key to success. Navy SEALs have a saying, ‘When you’re under pressure you don’t rise to the occasion, you sink to level of your training.’ So, always train well.”

His second piece of advice encouraged all participants to embrace hardships and always remain humble. As martin put it, “hardships are inescapable aspects of life and when we overcome them we have the capacity to grow, improve, and become better people.”

After sharing his final remarks, Martin presented The Promote Award to Coquitron 2284B from Ethicon Johnson & Johnson in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico.
Following the awards presentation, Martin toured the America’s Navy exhibit where USS Nimitz virtual reality display was parked while Cmdr. Allen Owens, NRC's Navy Marketing and Advertising operations officer gave an interview to VEX World 2018 media team explaining the Navy’s newest immersive virtual reality, mobile display built inside a state-of-the art 18-wheel vehicle.

"Inside the Nimitz, patrons can pilot a high-speed assault craft and extract Navy SEALs from enemy territory when they start the mission,” shared Owens. “The virtual reality is a great opportunity to learn more about the technology the Navy uses and see technological programming used in real life situations. We are very excited to show students the STEM opportunities that the Navy offers and engage with them in a way that they are familiar and passionate about.”

Along with this unique exhibit, Explosive Ordnance Mobile Unit One (EODMU 1) team from Point Loma, California, was on site as well demonstrating their specialized Navy skills with several of their equipment including their Small Unmanned Ground Vehicles (SUG-V).

“I joined the Navy from NRD Ohio,” said, said Explosive Ordnance Disposalman 3rd Class Justin Laborce. “I thought it was great to come back to support NRD Ohio and the Navy by showcasing not only our equipment but our talent as EOD technicians.”

The primary goal for the Navy’s presence at VEX World 2018 according to Owens, is to educate and inspire the best-and-brightest prospective recruits about the Navy’s boundless potential and transformative capacity for their lives. For everyone involved, the America’s Navy exhibit has found a way to shape minds and attitudes allowing patrons to experience virtual reality, control one of several EODMU 1’s equipment and allowing authentic conversations with Navy recruiters.

“Navy produces exceptional leaders and provides the best possible training for careers of the future,” added Owens. “Events like VEX allow us to present the realities of a Navy mission in a truly interactive way.”

As with all things, it’s important to show, not just talk about, the Navy experience and Team Ohio, NRC, EODMU 1 and the America’s Navy team were able to do just that, show an experience.

The VEX Worlds Championship 2018 event brings together top robotics teams in different categories from more than 40 countries from around the world under one roof to share and celebrate their accomplishments while participating with the best teams from around the world.
