It hardly seems possible that Easter has come and gone and we are now more than half way through April! Summer is approaching quickly with Memorial Day only about five weeks away and the start of our 101 Days of Summer count down. Now is the time to begin summer planning and to make sure safety is a part of that plan.

In Proverbs 2:11 we read, “Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.”

Friend, it takes proper planning to live safe. Proper prior planning is powerful in preventing poor performance… and unnecessary injury. We all need to be particularly careful regarding water sports. Alcohol and boating do not mix! Be wise in your barbequing and outside activities. It is a happy but very busy time of year. We all need to make sure we do not overcommit ourselves and try to squeeze too much activity into too short a time period.

In all that you do, use discretion. Discretion truly is “…the better part of valor.” It is better to avoid a potentially dangerous situation than to run headlong into it and suffer the unnecessary consequences. In this manner, a clear understanding and awareness of your surroundings can serve to protect your health and well-being, as well as the health and well-being of those you love and others around you.

Planning, understanding and discretion are very useful and effective protective factors.

Speaking of planning and awareness, please know that we offer many resources, events and activities – spiritual and otherwise – through the Marine Corps Base Quantico Religious Ministry Center (703-784-2518) and Marine Corps Community Services to include Marine Corps Family Team Building (703-784-5253), Family Advocacy (703-784-2570), Military & Family Life Consultants (703-784-4220) and the Community Counseling Center (Main Side Office, 703-784-4248 / West Side Office, 703-432-6442). Another good agency is Families Overcoming Under Stress (FOCUS), a wonderful communication improvement training program designed to help couples and families address the unique stressors very often related to military life. They can be reached at 703-784-0189.

Also, do not forget about the our PREP (Prevention Relationship Enhancement Program) Marriage Communication Seminars, relationship building opportunities and the Chaplains’ Religious Enrichment Development Operation (CREDO) retreats that are readily available. In fact, CREDO offers personal growth retreats, spiritual growth retreats and marriage retreats. Please call the base Religious Ministry Center office (703-784-2518) if you would like more information about these excellent programs.
