1-46th Infantry Regiment brings fitness to Midland Middle School

COLUMBUS, Ga. (April 26, 2018) – Drill sergeants and other cadre members from Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, at Fort Benning, Georgia, led a series of physical fitness sessions April 26 at Midland Middle School in Columbus, Georgia.

The event was a part of Fort Benning’s Partners in Education program, which promotes continued partnerships between the military units and schools within the seven school districts of Columbus, Georgia, Phenix City, Alabama, and the surrounding communities.

Staff Sgt. Jacob Sejat, a B Co. drill sergeant, led the instruction while the other members of B Co. assisted in the exercises with the middle school students. Students conducted a standard Army physical training session, which consisted of warm-up exercise drills, physical training activities and a cool-down.

Sejat said this was his first time teaching in a school setting. He enjoyed watching the kids connect with the exercises and hopes they use these exercises in their future physical fitness sessions.

He added the PIE program is important for Soldiers to be involved in.

“The program allows us to interact with the community, and it gets rid of some of those negative stereotypes that are out there about the military,” Sejat said.

Gloria Brown, one of the physical education teachers at the school, agreed.

“It is one of the better opportunities for the students to learn about the military,” she said. “Fort Benning is a big part of how Columbus functions, and this program is that bridge that connects the schools with the Soldiers.”
