FORT HOOD, TX -- Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team "Greywolf," 1st Cavalry Division participated in the annual career day event at Meadows Elementary School on Fort Hood, April 20.

The elementary school holds a week-long event where the students learn about different careers, and on the final day the students have the option to dress as what they hope to have as a career, and get more of a hands-on experience with different career fields.

Approximately 50 people from the local and military community participated in the annual event.

"A lot of our kids are military," said Andrea Chaney, assistant principal, Meadows Elementary. "So, it's really a great experience, so they can see day in and day out what their parents are doing."

Due to the partnership with 2-82 FA, Meadows Elementary was able to experience an all out military experience.

The students were able to rotate to several stations the Soldiers prepared, learning about different Army careers like operating an M2 Bradley, an M88 Recovery Vehicle or learning about different tools Soldiers use everyday like night vision goggles, and binoculars.

"I think it’s really cool especially that a lot of their parents are military," said 2nd Lt. Allyson Hayley, platoon leader F Forward Support Company, 2-82 FA. "They probably don't get to interact with them in like a work environment, so seeing some of the things that their parents do and gives them a little more exposure."

Although the focus was for the students, the Soldiers were able to have a day where "work" wasn't the first priority.

"Its important since we're so close by to come and share with them what we do," Hayley explained. "It’s also important for the Soldiers because, we are so busy sometimes, and we don't get to show the public what we truly can do."

Career day is an option for students to learn and understand that the military is more than a uniform.

"The students can connect what they are learning to what could happen to them when they are older," Chaney said. "I think from the military aspect, they see this is what they do and it really puts it in perspective for them."

The Adopt-A-School program is part of Fort Hood 2010, which is a region wide effort providing soldier and family member volunteer mentors to more than 80 elementary, middle and high schools in the eight regional Independent School Districts.
