DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. -- The Dover Eagles and Dover Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 15 hockey teams took to the ice in a charity hockey game March 10, 2018, at the Centre Ice Rink in Harrington, Delaware.
Proceeds from the game, totaling $2,150, went toward the “Officers in Distress Fund” that helps families of fallen law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.
Dover Police Department officer Cpl. Thomas Hannon, who passed away Sept. 1, 2017, due to medical complications he suffered from a line of duty injury, was honored this year. Accompanied by family members, Hannon’s daughter, Reilly Hannon, dropped the ceremonial first puck.
“This game was very special to the FOP because of Brother Hannon and his family,” said Robert Cunningham, FOP coach. “I’m just overwhelmed with the show of support and want to thank everyone who donated to this great cause and local businesses who came and showed their support as well.”
The Eagles and FOP charity hockey game has been an annual event to raise money for various causes and with no exception this year, has provided an exciting game for those in attendance.
“I believe everyone gave it their all, on both sides of the ice and I can say for the FOP, we didn’t stop until the end,” said Cunningham. “I strongly believe this event is growing each year and I am very excited for next year’s event.”
The previous three years, each game between the Eagles and FOP have been won by two goals; the Eagles winning in 2015 and 2017, and FOP winning in 2016. This year, the Eagles made it two years in a row by winning 8-4.
“The game plan going in was to have fun and raise money for a charity,” said Matt Lothrop, Dover Eagles coach. “We had a speed advantage to their size so we capitalized on that; I was shocked we jumped out to the early lead.”
The Dover Eagles hockey team is comprised of current and former members of Team Dover, military retirees and veterans.
“On behalf of the Eagles, we just want to thank the FOP for hosting this year's game and to the fans who showed up to support both teams and an amazing charity,” said Mike Roth, Dover Eagles center and co-captain. “It’s events like these that go a long way in not only building the relationship between the base and the community, but they bring us together to help families going through hard times.”
