CRANE, Ind. –Crane Army Ammunition Activity Deputy to the Commander Norman Thomas received the Joint Munitions Command 2017 MG John C. Raaen Jr. Achievement Award April 11 for his service to the U.S. Army and his exemplary contributions to CAAA.

The award, announced by the JMC Commanding General Brig. Gen. Heidi Hoyle during a virtual town hall meeting, is JMC’s most prestigious annual award and presented to the JMC employee who best demonstrates a well-rounded career, extraordinary accomplishments and service to the Warfighter.

“Mr. Norm Thomas has over three decades of service to the Warfighter,” Hoyle said to the JMC Enterprise workforce. “He was absolutely the candidate for winning this honor.”

Col. Michael Garlington, CAAA commander, presented the award in person to Thomas at Crane during the town hall.

The award recognized Thomas for providing exemplary contributions to CAAA, with results that went well beyond what was expected in terms of quality, quantity, timeliness and impact. Thomas started his professional career at CAAA as a Project Engineer in 1983 working in Gun Ammunition, Demilitarization, Renovation, Maintenance and Pyrotechnics. Through the decades he rose into management positions including director over production and manufacturing, depot operations and served as the organization’s first Chief of Staff.

In nominating Thomas for the award, Garlington cited how Thomas “has continually distinguished himself as a technically gifted executive manager and team player who has consistently exhibited the leadership traits, wisdom, and technical acumen that are highly desired in the Army’s senior managers.”

The MG John C. Raaen Jr. Achievement Award is named after Maj. Gen. John Carpenter Raaen Jr., who experienced a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Army. Raaen’s career exemplifies the holistic ammunition professional – active in research and development, procurement, production, maintenance and storage and stockpile management – while keenly aware that the final customer is a Soldier in the field.

Crane Army Ammunition Activity produces and provides conventional munitions requirements in support of U.S. Army and Joint Force readiness. It is one of 14 installations of the Joint Munitions Command and one of 23 organic industrial bases under the U.S. Army Materiel Command, which include arsenals, depots, activities and ammunition plants. Established Oct. 1977, it is located on Naval Support Activity Crane.
