Children of service members were invited to dress up as their favorite superheroes and partake in indoor physical activities and meet other families.

"I think events like this one is important for any community, but especially with the military community," said Keegan Mills, the Community Relations and Event Coordinator of Naval Station Great Lakes MWR. "Some people are assigned here and are unfamiliar with the community. Our events are a way to bring to bring those families together to meet new friends and partake in a fun event in a new area."

The event was open to all Active, Reserve, and Retired military families as well as Department of Defense Civilian families.

"Being in an Army family, we don't have many opportunities to meet Navy families," said Seanna Francis, an Army spouse and parent. "Events like these give the kids a chance to play with other children in the community and get them out of the house to meet new friends. We try to attend all the events like this because it gives them the space to be active and not have to deal with the cold weather."

"It's important to have events like this because it is directed to not only the children, but it gives the chance for Moms and Dads to get together as well. Our events are chance for everyone to have some fun," said John Prue, Installation Program Director of MWR.

To begin the event, Capt. James D. Hawkins, Commanding Officer of Naval Station Great Lakes, signed the Proclamation, declaring April as Military Child Month.

"The Proclamation is a way to acknowledge and honor military children," said Mills. "It's a way to thank them for being amazing and honor the struggles and hardships of being a military child."

Training courses were inspired by well-known superheroes and were adapted to fun and fit activities that included: The Shield Throw, The Mighty Thor Hammer Throw, Hero Obstacle Training, Hawkeye Archery, and the Spiderman Climb.

"We usually see between 50 up to 200 people attend our events like this one,” said Mills. “Because this is the last indoor gym event for the season, we expect around 200.”

Upcoming events hosted by MWR are the Fun and Fit Club, the Family Fun and Fit Splash Bash, and Sensory Friendly Movie Screenings.
