Kandahar, Afghanistan – The Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment ‘Red Warriors,’ 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, deployed to Afghanistan have partnered with the 30th Mountain Battalion ‘Carpathians’ Eagles’ out of the Romania Army.

The Red Warrior’s and Carpathians’ Eagles are working together as part of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel to engage and build relationships with the local populace in Afghanistan, as well as provide security for NATO forces and civilians.

Planning and coordinating these missions requires teamwork, cooperation, and trust, which according to Maj. Dan Nitu, was built through the history of Romanian and U.S. forces working together to achieve a common goal.

Nitu, operations staff officer, 30th Mountain Bn., has worked with U.S. forces multiple times in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

“With every interaction we are able to see how (U.S. forces) procedures work, apply (those) procedures, and improve (our own) task force,” explained Nitu. “(As a team we) want to work effectively and fulfill the tasks and missions.”

The 30th Mountain Bn. has worked with NATO and U.S. forces numerous times since they were founded on June 1st, 1969. The Carpathians’ Eagles were the first Romanian mountain battalion to conduct military operations since World War II, when they took part in Joint Enterprise Operation in Kosovo in 2007. The battalion also participated in the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan from 2008-2012.

“The Romanians are dedicated, smart, and committed,” said 1st Lt. Atticus Blair, operations assistant officer for 1st Bn., 12th Inf. Reg., 2nd IBCT. “They are on top of (tasks) and team players; they are trained very well and augment the U.S. forces well.”

Although there is a language barrier between the two forces, Soldiers of the 1st Bn., 12th Inf. Reg., 2nd IBCT said it does not affect their ability to work as a team.

“They are very professional,” said Sgt. Quinnton Brandt, battle noncommissioned officer, 1st Bn., 12th Inf. Reg., 2nd IBCT. “They have good ideas, (they) know their part of the mission, and they know what they are doing.”
