Team Vandenberg volunteers came together to educate military children from the Youth Center on what their parents experience during deployments, here, on April 4.

The Kids Understanding Deployment Operations is a program developed to give children a deeper understanding of the military deployment process their parents go through before deploying to support the overseas mission.

"KUDOS is our opportunity to share with the military children what a deployment is," said Master Sgt. Glenn Walter, 30th Force Support Squadron family readiness NCO. "Our goal is to put their minds at ease.”
The 30th Logistics Readiness Squadron Installation Deployment Readiness Cell and the personnel deployment function took the children through the processing line to simulate receiving their mobility gear. Vehicle operations then transported them to Cocheo Park to be greeted with numerous educational displays.

“We have all these base supporting agencies whether its Security Forces, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Emergency Management, Self-Aid Buddy Care, Fire Department, and all these folks who are supporting the different missions down there,” said Walter.

The 30th Security Forces Squadron also organized a vehicle and weapons display and a military working dog demonstration. The 30th Civil Engineer Squadron brought out a wide array of displays for the children. The readiness flight brought their chemical gear display; the explosive ordnance disposal flight displayed and demonstrated their bomb disposal robots; and the Fire Department brought a water hose.

“We want you to see everything that mom and dad go through,” explained during a briefing by Col. Gregory Wood, 30th Space Wing vice commander. “Also, we want you to know that we are taking care of mom and dad, and that they’re going to come home safe every time they deploy.”

The knowledge adds an element to where the children can communicate their own feelings better when they’re asking questions when their parents are deploying.

“It was really eye opening to see Team Vandenberg come together and be a part of this,” said Walter. “Having everyone from the vice wing commander and command chief is very awesome and humbling. It truly is like a big family.”
