    Picking Brains, Healing Wounds

    SAN DIEGO, CA, UNITED STATES

Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Zachary Kreitzer

    Naval Medical Center San Diego

While many associate brain injuries with combat since 2001, 82 percent have occurred in non-combat settings.
“Each year more than 13,000 service members are diagnosed with a TBI,” said Angela Basham, regional education coordinator for Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. “Events such as this help to increase awareness as well as teach prevention techniques for service members, veterans and their families.”
A wide variety of doctors spanning many different specialties came together to help care for the wounded, from neuroscientists to psychologists. The symposium covered all aspects of treatment for TBI's, from initial post-injury care, to how TBI can affect sleep and relationships.
Traumatic Brain Injury Program Manager Chad Rodamer said when it comes to treating a TBI, an inter-disciplinary team is necessary. "When someone suffers from a TBI it effects how they speak, balance vision and how they think. No one specialist can fix it, healing a TBI is a team effort."
Doctors from NMCSD, DVBIC and many other specialists around southern California continue to work together to bring the most comprehensive care to the service members and families that are affected by TBI's.
