Chief Navy Recruiters Recognize the 125th Birthday of the Chief Petty Officer

    Commander, Navy Recruiting Command

MILLINGTON, TN – In celebration of the U.S. Navy chief’s 125th birthday, Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) recognizes the fleet’s finest, the chiefs of Navy Recruiting.

Earning the rank of chief petty officer is a major achievement, and the enlisted leadership of NRC take pride in the title.

“This is a great accomplishment,” said Navy Counselor Master Chief Sharon Kinloch the senior enlisted leader of NRC. “It is up to us the chief to train junior Sailors and make them better, to guide and mentor the Chiefs Mess of the future. Before a Sailor makes chief, we make sure they will don that uniform with honor, courage and commitment.”

When a Sailor moves up in rank more is expected and demanded. As a leader in the U.S. Navy the chief petty officer welcomes the responsibility.

“Chief to me goes synonymous to leader,” said Navy Counselor Chief Matthew Barthel, a policy analyst of NRC. “No matter the rate, the chief is there to lead. Throughout my recruiting career I have been able to change lives, helping civilians on their path to become a Sailor. It means a lot to me to be able to continue doing this as a Navy leader.”

The chief petty officer creed hosts the values of a chief, to humbly accept challenge and face adversity and the phrase that is as old as the chief petty officer rank: ask the chief.

“Ask the chief is a great phrase,” said Navy Counselor Master Chief Franklin Tiongco, the national chief recruiter. “In today’s Navy, ‘ask the chief’ is not just related to work. Junior Sailors are aware that they can approach their chief with anything. In recruiting we have chiefs that work with recruiters that are from the fleet. When these fleet Sailors have questions that we don’t have the answer to, we will find the answer.”

Being the spearhead of the Navy, the chief is a role model to all Sailors no matter the situation.

“In my experience your chief will always fight for you,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Laura Comer, an administrative clerk of NRC. “Whenever I have a question or need guidance, there is always a chief there to help. There is a reason why they earned their anchors.”

April 1st marks the 125th chief petty officer birthday celebrating trusted leadership, technical expertise, advising and mentorship that enable America’s combat ready naval force to be continuously flexible, more innovative, and lethal in achieving operational excellence on all domains.
