“They finished high school but not so much college. She (mom) made sure all four of her children went to school and finished college so that we could have a good setup for those coming behind us,” she said.
“My grandmother was a homemaker, but she took care of my grandfather and even the people in the community” said Brown. “She was a church missionary, whenever someone was sick or in need she was there to make sure they had what they needed.”
As inspiration for her military career, Brown gives credit to her two aunts, whom she describes as both successful Army officers and productive citizens after their military careers.
She says one of her aunts had difficulty getting acclimated to the military because she was an ordinance officer which was a predominately male field at the time.
Brown recalled that aunt persistently saying, “I know that this is a male dominated field, but I am an officer too. No matter what kind of work I get, I will be successful.”
With a big smile on her face and excitement in her voice, Brown said
“They explained to me that the military was very hard,” she said. “I realized that they were successful officers, their husbands and kids were successful. If they could do it then I could do it too.”
Reflecting back on the lives and the accomplishments of the women in her family, Brown credits their faith as the key to their success.
“It was their Christian values that caused them to have hope and believe in themselves,” she said. “No matter the obstacle they faced, they had pure determination to defy the obstacles and reach the goal that they had set.”
