FT. Meade, Md. - The U.S. Army Field Band bid farewell today to Command Sergeant Major Leslie Nock and welcomed the new Command Sergeant Major Matthew Kanowith.
Nock, of Syracuse, New York, took command of the Army Field Band on Sept. 9, 2014. Prior to joining the Field Band, Nock served in a variety of assignments, including the 1st Cavalry Division Band, the U.S. Army Europe Band and Chorus, the U.S. Army Signal Corps Band, the 10th Mountain Division Band, the U.S. Army School of Music, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band, the 8th Army Band and the 18th Army Band.
In addition to being the first Sergeant Major of the 1st Cavalry Division Band, Nock served as Senior Drill Sergeant at the U.S. Army School of Music, Platoon Sergeant, and First Sergeant, and attended the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. She was deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She holds a MEd from Pennsylvania State University, a BMEd from Arizona State University and an AAS in Trombone Performance from Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York.

Command Sergeant Major Matthew Kanowith was previously an Assistant Section Leader in the clarinet section. He was a member of the Pentagon Winds and has performed as a featured soloist with the Concert Band. Prior to joining the Field Band, Kanowith was a member of the Florida West Coast Symphony and a participant in the Sarasota and Chautauqua music festivals. He earned a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Indiana University.
"It is my honor to serve alongside the Soldiers and civilians of this distinguished unit as Command Sergeant Major,” Kanowith said. “We also thank CSM Leslie Nock for her leadership, and wish her well as she completes a distinguished 30-year career in the Army."
