    U.S. Marine Corps Logistics Command

Maj. Gen. Craig C. Crenshaw, commanding general, LOGCOM, received the NCO sword from Sgt. Maj. Stephanie K. Murphy, outgoing sergeant major, and handed it to Sgt. Maj. Michael J. Rowan during a Relief and Appointment Ceremony, completing the transfer of duties.
Crenshaw praised Murphy for her many accomplishments while serving as LOGCOM's senior enlisted Marine.
"Our command is very fortunate to have Sergeant Major Stephanie Murphy here for the last three years," Crenshaw said. "As the commanding general for Marine Corps Logistics Command, there are a number of things you want in a sergeant major and Sergeant Major Murphy has been every bit of that.
"Sergeant Major Murphy came here with speed and hit the ground running and she never stopped," he pointed out. "Many of you here today can attest to that."
Crenshaw said Murphy surveyed the command to see where she could make an impact.
"It started at the NCO level where she revitalized (Professional Military Education) programs," he said. "It did not stop with our NCOs, it went to our staff NCOs (where) she rejuvenated programs and events that allowed that camaraderie to continue to foster."
Murphy's impact was also felt by the officers and civilian-Marines as well, according to Crenshaw.
Crenshaw conveyed his gratitude to Murphy saying, "thank you for being my senior enlisted advisor. You were the perfect person at the right time."
He then highlighted Rowan's top assignments stating he is an infantryman who has completed several deployments and has served as a Marine Security Guard detachment commander. His last assignment was as the sergeant major, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Forces Reserve.
"To be a sergeant major for this command, it's not a luck of the draw," he expressed. "A board selects a sergeant major. We (are) fortunate to have Sergeant Major Rowan come in and pick up the mantle and move it forward."
Crenshaw then addressed his new senior enlisted advisor.
"The bar has been set Sergeant Major Rowan and that is what you expect," he said. "You expect the bar to be set and you expect to raise it.
"If you look around there are a number of staff NCOs here, a number of NCOs and Marines from all ranks and a number of civilians at different levels," he concluded. "They too, as we do, require your leadership. I expect nothing less than that. Welcome aboard."
Murphy, who is scheduled to retire at the end of March after 30 years of service, addressed LOGCOM personnel.
"Over the last three years, the CG has implemented a lot of change," Murphy said. "I am a changer and I love change management. I love changing and making things new.
"I don't think anything old is good and what I mean by that, I'm not talking about age, I'm saying that you have got to want to be better," she added. "You have got to want to do better and you have got to follow what's happening in today's world and that is what he did here at LOGCOM.
"LOGCOM supports the warfighter and it's our goal to ensure that everything the warfighter needs is taken care of," she continued. "I want to thank you for what you do and know how important it is."
Murphy encouraged the Marines to always protect what they have earned.
"It's up to you," she stressed. "You are the person that you look at in the mirror when you get up every morning and you are the person you look at every night before you go sleep. It's up to you to protect what you have earned and I expect nothing less than that from you."
Lastly, Rowan spoke to the crowd and thanked Crenshaw for the opportunity to serve as LOGCOM's new sergeant major.
"Sergeant Major Murphy thanked Marines, Sailors and civilian-Marines and I ask you for that same support you gave her," Rowan said. "I'm going to need everyone's help because at the end of the day it's about moving LOGCOM forward and supporting the warfighter."
"I was impressed when I saw the map of the world and saw LOGCOM's footprint," he concluded. "I am truly amazed (at) the amount of work that goes on here."
