For the first time military personnel from the Dominican Republic Armed Forces, the Puerto Rico National Guard and US Southern Command gather for a SPP FY19 Planning Conference at the PRNG Headquarters in Fort Buchanan, Guaynabo, March 2. The conference seeks to establish the main aspects of the events that will take place between the PRNG and the Dominican Republic during the up-coming year as part of the SPP.
The representatives from the Dominican Republic were Col. Freddy Marte, representative of the Dom. Rep. Ministry of Defense and Lt. Cmdr. Omy Concepción, Military Liaison at the Dominican Republic Embassy in Washington D.C.
With 79 nations participating in the SPP the program has become fundamental in facilitating cooperation across all aspects of civil-military affairs and by encouraging people-to-people ties at the state level. This approach resulted in a group of English Language Professionals from the Dominican Republic and members of TESOL (Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages) visiting the PRNG Youth Challenge Academy and the PRNG Language Center at Fort Allen, Juana Diaz, early in March.
“The trend has changed around the world as there is no more American English or British English, but English regardless of regional accents,” said Dr. Juan Velez, Executive Director TESOL in Dominican Republic, while addressing the students at Challenge. “English has become the ‘lingua franca’ and a bridge that unites our countries.”
The distinguished visitors took the opportunity for the visit during the TESOL Convention celebrated in Puerto Rico and were impressed with the quality of training and methodology used at the PRNG Youth Challenge Academy and PRNG Language Center to successfully teach the English Language. They also captured ideas that they will seek to implement at their faculties in the Dominican Republic.
