ROSE BARRACKS, Germany - The 2d Cavalry Regiment equal opportunity office hosted a Women’s History Month observance March 16, 2018 at the Theater on Rose Barracks.

Women’s History Month is celebrated March 1 – 31. This year’s theme, which is highlighted in a presidential proclamation, is ‘Honoring women who fight all forms of discrimination’. The ceremony opened with the posting of colors by an all female cadet color guard from the Vilseck High School Junior ROTC. And the National Anthem was sung by Vilseck High School choir.

Capt. Amanda Hassett, former commander for Cobra Batter, Field Artillery Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment was the guest speaker. She became the first female commander of a M777 howitzer firing battery within 2CR and U.S. Army Europe in October 2016.

“The month of March allows us to celebrate and recognize the achievements of American women who are making a difference to better our society. This year’s theme focuses on women’s tireless efforts to end discrimination in all forms,” Hassett said. “Through their commitment, strength and courage, women across the country are overcoming obstacles and achieving previously unobtainable accomplishments. These inspirational women, dedicated to the achievement of equality, have shaped our country’s history and paved the way for a brighter future. They have made sacrifices and endured struggles so young women following in there footsteps do not have to.”

“I am proud to share a sisterhood with these strong and influential women for without them I would certainly not be in the position I am today,” she concluded.

Professor Hannah Marsh, historian and history professor for the University of Maryland University College, gave a special tribute to Lt. Col. Charity Earley, the first African-American woman to be an officer in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and was the commanding officer of the first battalion of African-American women to serve overseas during World War II.
