In honor of Women’s History Month, the Enlisted Women of the 127th Wing had guest speaker Vicky Rad encourage others by sharing her story on Saturday, March 3, at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
Rad is the deputy director of the Macomb County Dept. of Planning and Economic Development. Rad has been leading business development efforts throughout Michigan. She is also president of the Women in Defense (WID) Michigan Chapter, a national security organization. WID is a non-profit professional networking and development organization for women and men across Michigan who contribute to national defense and security.
“Vicky is the conduit that helps the military base connect with the community with resources and ideas. Our partnership with Macomb County has been great because of the efforts of Vicky,” said Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, 127th Wing commander, as he introduced Rad.
During her speech she spoke of mentoring.
“Mentoring helps me to remember where I came from,” said Rad. “I enjoy giving back and making a difference.”
“My purpose and passion is embracing others and seeing them grow,” said Rad. “Seeing the individual grow and helping them in that space.”
Those in attendance were encouraged to build each other up through their experiences.
Rad ended her session with a quote from poet Maya Angelou: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
“It was inspiring to hear of her accomplishments,” said Senior Airman Jabett Glenn, command support staff, of the 127th Air Refueling Group “Also, how she overcame the obstacles she faced.”
The Enlisted Women of the 127th Wing began its meetings with the overall goal to empower, enlighten and support women throughout the 127th Wing.
“It is important for men and women of the wing to hear someone who is making a difference in the community,” said Master Sgt. Chandra Corrado, 127th Wing retention manager, and one of the founding members of the Enlisted Women of the 127th Wing.
The next meeting of the Enlisted Women of the 127th Wing will be at 1300 Sunday of April Drill in building 303 conference room.
