Story by Lance Cpl. Damion Hatch

    3rd Marine Division

CAMP SENDAI, SENDAI, Japan – Family is more than just the people you live with. Family is a bond you have with someone that no one can take away. The average American household has 2-3 children who grow up together. One Marine from 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, grew up far from that average.

Lance Cpl. Brian Rubenacker, a rifleman with Golf Company, grew up in Farmdale, New York, with eight brothers and six sisters.

“It seemed pretty normal growing up with my family,” said Rubenacker. “Having so many brothers and sisters, I’m used to being around a lot of people all the time.”
Not only does he have 14 siblings, but one of his older brothers is a master sergeant in the Marine Corps.

“My brother was always a role model for me, and always helped take care of our family,” said Rubenacker. “He also traveled around the world and got to see new places and cultures.”

Rubenacker said he looked up to his brother and watched as he got to travel around the world and experience different cultures, so he decided to follow in his footsteps.

Although he joined to help his family, at one point he said he felt helpless. Rubenacker’s mother had a heart attack before he left for deployment.

“It really hurt knowing that I couldn’t be home when my mom needed me the most,” Rubenaker said. “But my family grew closer to each other because we all look out for one another.”

Rubenacker said family is someone that you can rely on when you need them the most. Whenever he’s going through a hard time, he looks to his brothers to the left and right to set him on the right track.
