MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 28, 2018) - With sincere care and concern for the welfare of its civilian workforce, NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support (NAVSUP WSS) held the second of three 3 Steps 4 Success seminars Feb. 20 at the Naval Support Activity in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Numerous civilian employees from across the NAVSUP enterprise as well as the Defense Logistics Agency gathered for the unique opportunity of getting an "insider's perspective" on what happens during the job application and interviewing process. NAVSUP WSS hosted Step 1 - Resume Writing and USAJobs, Feb. 6, and Step 2 - Interview Panel - seminar was an extension of Step 1. Step 3 - Fashion Show - is scheduled for March 29.
According to organizers Dawn Miller and Lisa Newton, NAVSUP WSS Workforce Planning Directorate, and Carrie Hawk, NAVSUP Human Resources Equal Employment Opportunity officer, the seminars provide valuable tools and resources to the civilian workforce when planning for applying for a new job. Miller and Newton provided an overview of Step 1 and then gave a Step 2 presentation along with some extra personal advice to attendees.
"We like to host this program at least once a year to make sure employees are ready and equipped to apply for merit promotions when those opportunities arise," said Miller.
"Another goal is to keep the workforce apprised of USAJobs system changes, interview techniques, and dressing for success," added Newton.
Step 1 provided civilian employees with techniques for federal resume writing and tips for using the USAJobs Application Manager. The course of instruction and discussion covered varying resume types, the journey of a resume as it makes its way through the application process, creating a baseline resume and tailored resume to the job application and career management tips. The instruction also featured an on-screen walk-through of USAJobs to take a look at its various features, how to create job searches and look up application status.
Step 2 - Interview Panel - provided details on how to prepare for an interview and explained how the Interview Panel works inside the hiring process. Having a solid resume is the keystone for leading into Step 2, and how the resume is weighed alongside an in-person or conference call interview was also stressed at the seminar. Although the presentation of slides with interview tips, sample interview questions to expect, and examples of putting work experiences into context provided direction for the flow of the seminar, it was actually the sharing of real-life experiences and examples that made the difference.
"Having sat on many interview panels personally, I felt honored to participate in the 3 Steps 4 Success seminar and share what I have experienced," said Samad Syed, NAVSUP WSS Master Data supervisor and panelist for the Question and Answer portion of the seminar. "There is definitely a process we have to go through for conducting interviews, and sharing some do's and don'ts and offering some suggestions is invaluable to people who are looking to move up in their careers or choosing career paths they are interested in pursuing."
"I think one of the most profound pieces of advice one of the panelists provided was to actively manage your career by incorporating three concepts - attitude, experience and training," said Tameka Drayton, contracting officer for NAVSUP WSS and Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Council chairwoman. "These concepts must also be intertwined in representing your career to the interview panel, and also that your reputation follows you wherever you go so it's important to be consistent, positive and always doing the right thing - even when no one is looking."
NAVSUP WSS is hosting its next 3 Steps 4 Success seminar - Step 3 - Fashion Show - which is an hour-long seminar on how to dress for success during an interview. Step 3 will be held March 29 from 1-2 p.m. at the Building 309 Auditorium at NSA Mechanicsburg.
