The man soon to be the top staff noncommissioned officer in the organization that has oversight of most of the Marine Corps’ bases took a familiarization tour of Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., Feb. 13.

The visit was prompted by the fact that Marine Corps Installations Command is getting a new sergeant major this summer.

“The purpose of my visit (to MCLBB) is to hang out with Marine Corps Installations Command Sgt. Maj. Cruz whom I’ll be replacing in June,” explained Sgt. Maj. Charles R. Williams, Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., sergeant major. “I’ve never been out on the West Coast, so I’m trying to get a better understanding of some of the challenges and issues
    MCI West is facing.”

“He’s taking over my billet this summer, so this was a great opportunity to bring him out here because he’s never been to Barstow,” confirmed Sgt. Maj. Anthony Cruz Jr., current sergeant major for MCICOM. “He
understands the business and is a great asset.”

Williams flew into the Daggett Army Airfield Feb. 13, accompanied by Cruz and Sgt. Maj. Julio E. Meza, Marine Corps Installations West.

First Sergeant Neil Roselli, Headquarters Company first sergeant and acting base sergeant major, led the trio to several locations aboard the Nebo side of the base, including the Marine Corps Exchange, the wind
turbine site, base housing, the Single Marine Program facilities located in the Active Duty Recreation Center, the new enlisted barracks at Pettit Hall, and the weapons range.

The sergeants major then conducted a question and answer session with Marines from Headquarters Company during lunch at the Route 66 Café before heading out to the Yermo Annex of MCLBB.

Betty Jackson with Operations division of Production Plant Barstow said Robert “Chip” Schwartz, plant manager of the Marine Depot
Maintenance Command facility, conducted an in-briefing on the function of the Plant.

“They took a tram tour of the exterior facilities including the back shops,” Jackson said. “Then they took a walking tour of the crane-way to get a first-hand look at our repair and refurbishing facilities.”

Following the PPB visit, the sergeants major met with Chad Hildebrandt, Railway Operations supervisor to discuss the money saving aspects of rail
    operations for the Corps.

After a quick visit to the Lt. Col. Robert Lindsley Stables, home of the last remaining Mounted Color Guard in the Marine Corps, the group returned to MCI West headquarters aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The MCICOM website at http://www.mcicom.marines.mil/ describes its mission: “MCICOM exercises command and control of Marine Corps Installations via regional commanders in order to provide oversight, direction, and coordination of installation services and to optimize
support to the Operating Forces, tenants, and activities.”
