U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers met with base leaders and military spouses during a visit, Feb. 22, to Fairchild to discuss current base issues and the upcoming Congressional Military Family Summit.

Col. Ryan Samuelson, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, and Col. Johan Deutscher, 141st ARW commander, provided McMorris Rodgers and her staff a mission briefing to kick-off the visit.

The briefing highlighted several important topics to include: base housing, manning, upcoming projects and challenges the base is currently facing such as the Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) ground water contamination.

McMorris Rodgers thanked Samuelson and Team Fairchild for being proactive and involved in the on-going water contamination crisis and presented a certificate of special congressional recognition to Col. Scot Heathman, 92nd ARW vice commander, for the wing’s outstanding support for Chairman House Veterans Advisory Committee November 2017.

“Today’s visit from Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers was very productive,” Samuelson said. “We were able to update her on several important issues to include: the additional KC-135 Stratotankers, military construction projects, total force integration with our guard partners and the water contamination issue. Several of our spouses met with her as well to discuss ways to improve efforts and programs for military families – the visit was time well spent.”

McMorris Rodgers met with military spouses at the Airman and Family Readiness Center to speak about the upcoming Congressional Military Family Summit scheduled for this fall. Various topics, such as spousal employment, child care and housing were covered.

“We are actively looking for ways to make it easier for military spouses to start a career, not just a job,” McMorris Rodgers said. “The well-being of our military members and their spouses is important to us. We will do everything we can to help.”

The Congressional Military Family Summit is hosted by members of Congress to bring together service members and their families to discuss the most pressing issues facing military families today. The summit is scheduled for October 2018.
