NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2018) – More than 150 Airmen assigned to the 105th Airlift Wing participated in RODEO training designed to enhance their skills in responding to a variety of attacks in a deployed location and at home at Stewart Air National Guard Base.

The Airmen learned about the different phases of a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and high-yield Explosive attack, including how to prepare for such an attack and how to respond.

Staff Sgt. Juan Ospina, an emergency management specialist assigned to the wing, said the training allows Airmen to brush up on their skills to be better prepared to emerging threats globally.

“Our threats are always evolving so we have to meet those evolving threats with refreshers,” Ospina said.

Airmen learned how to inspect and care for their protective equipment, like gas masks and protective suits, react to unexploded ordnance, read different CBRNE detection technologies, and provide first aid to themselves and wingmen.

Master Sgt. Jime Thompson, a medic assigned to the wing, said he and the other medical personnel kept their portion of the training to the essentials.

“It’s all pretty basic stuff but as long as they’re able to grasp the concepts that are being put out, they should be able to save some people,” Thompson said.

The training is just one example of how the 105th Airlift Wing continues to maintain standards and stay prepared for any situation that could arise.
