OLYMPIA, Wash. – Sailors from tenant commands throughout Navy Region Northwest traveled to the state capitol in Olympia to meet with the Washington State Legislature as part of the annual Navy Appreciation Day, Feb. 21.

Government officials convened for a special recognition proclamation for service members in the Senate Chamber and in the House Chamber to honor the Navy. Each chamber came up with separate resolutions, expressing appreciation for the Navy, and all the family members and friends who have shared their sacrifices with them. The resolutions continued, thanking the Navy for its many contributions to the United States, the people living there, and the entire global community.

Rear Admiral Gary Mayes, commander, Navy Region Northwest, talked to the representatives, thanking them for supporting more than 192,000 Sailors, civilian employees, family members, retirees and contractors across Navy Region Northwest.

“Your record of legislative support of the Navy and other services speaks for itself – you’ve continued to focus on legislation helping military families more easily become a part of Washington’s workforce and school system, helping veterans transition in to the civilian economy, and enable our Navy Operations and training to be more compatible with the surrounding communities,” Mayes said. “I appreciate all the work this august body does to make Washington an even better homeport for the Navy.”

State Rep. Sherry Appleton, the senior member of the 23rd-district legislative team and a former two-term Poulsbo City Council member, gave remarks on her appreciation of the Navy and the service members who were in attendance.

“It has always been a privilege to become friends with men and women of the Navy,” Appleton said. “Its an honor to stand here today for your service. These men and woman work hard to protect our freedoms and ensure international trade and commerce. So today lets honor, recognize and express our appreciation for all of those who have served in our U.S. Navy, and the family members who shared their sacrifices. We hear you, we salute you, and we thank you.”

Following the resolutions’ unanimous “Aye” throughout the House of Representatives and Senate chambers, Mayes closed with a few words of appreciation on behalf of the Navy.

“Today, and every day, your Navy is operating around the world, and around the clock accomplishing its mission,” Mayes said. “Much of the Navy’s success in the Pacific can be directly attributed to the dedication and patriotism from the people of the great State of Washington. On behalf of the Navy, Thank you Washington for the continued support of the United States Navy.”
