SAN ANTONIO - (Feb. 20, 2018) To further spread Navy Awareness throughout the city during Navy Week, Feb. 19 - 25, Sailors and civilian personnel from Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NMOC), and Navy Recruiting District San Antonio visited with students at Sam Houston High School on the city’s eastside.
Every year, America's Navy comes home to approximately 15 cities across the country to show Americans why having a strong Navy is critical to the American way of life.
Students had the opportunity to interact with the Sailors and Navy civilians, and ask questions about various careers choices within America’s Navy.
“I learned a lot of information about the Navy and the benefits that they offer,” said Jalen Watkins, a junior with the school. “I think it is very important for organizations like the Navy to visit our school and provide information that we don’t always hear about.”
According to Watkins, the Navy could provide students with additional opportunities other than just joining the workforce and make something of their lives.
“It was great to speak with students about the opportunities that the Navy’s Oceanographic Office provides,” said Lt. Justin Shaw, an oceanographer assigned to the Naval Oceanographic Office, NMOC. “One of the programs we talked about was the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Scholarship Program which provides cash awards at the rate of $25,000 - $38,000 per year.”
Senior Army Instructor for Sam Houston High School, 1st Sgt. Donald Halford, believes in the importance of military services visiting the school.
“First and foremost, many of our students believe that joining the military means picking up a weapon and going to war,” said Halford. “Having the Navy’s Oceanographic Office and Navy recruiters here enlightened the students and informed them that they are numerous career choices in the military.”
Later that evening, the Fred Brock American Legion Post No. 828 located on Martin Luther King Drive hosted retired Rear Adm. Eric Coy Young, during a reception and briefing themed, “The Navy the Nation Needs”.
Young, a native of Abilene, Texas, and former commander of Navy Reserve Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., briefed more than 100 members of the post to include legion district representatives and was reunited with a fellow shipmate, Richard Glover, after 33 years.
Sailors and civilians from the USS Constitution; Navy Band Southeast; USS San Antonio (LPD-17); Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group Two; U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard; Naval History and Heritage Command; and NMOC are in the city for a series of engagements designed to bring America's Navy closer to the people its protects.
