It’s the “lightbulb moments” that make it all worthwhile, according to an Army instructor who helps hundreds of Soldiers hone their information technology (IT) skills annually.

Sgt. 1st Class Rodrick Webb was named Tobyhanna’s Warfighter of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2018 during a ceremony at the Wilkes-Barre Penguins hockey game on Saturday. Webb is an Information Systems Operator Analyst who trains Army Reserve, National Guard and active duty Soldiers at the High Tech Reserve Training Site – Maintenance, 80th Training Command (The Army School System or TASS).

“I love teaching someone something they have never heard of or even seen before,” Webb said, explaining the lightbulb moment as the instant the student reaches the point of understanding. “It’s a beautiful thing.” The 24-year veteran maintains several industry certifications in addition to his military occupational specialty code training.

During his career, Webb also provided IT support during two deployments to Southwest Asia.

Coworkers say Webb possesses unlimited potential and consistently provides exceptional contributions to the esprit de corps of the unit. He volunteers countless hours working with local youth groups. Furthermore, the noncommissioned officer (NCO) participated in last year’s change of command ceremony, a Memorial Day tribute and competed in a Combined Federal Campaign 5K run fundraiser.

“His winning spirit, combined with sustained traditions and customs, fosters cohesive teamwork and outstanding commitment to the school’s mission,” said Maj. Bobby Webb, commandant. “He is a positive role model who instills the highest morals and valuable life skills.”

As an instructor, Webb is able to deliver material in several different formats so all the students can learn the material, according to Master Sgt. Michelle Arbogast, NCO in charge of the training site. It’s no secret Webb is passionate about what he does, she added.

“Webb complies with all mandatory military training, plus looks for other opportunities to refine his skills,” she said. “He has a great ability to share what he knows through the course instruction.”

A drill sergeant once told a young, impressionable Soldier he could succeed in the Army if he always stay gainfully employed. To Webb, that meant never being afraid to work and to continuously look for ways to improve.

“I love what I do,” Webb said. “I’ll never tire of learning new things and sharing that knowledge with others.”
